Information Systems

Elective Course Guide

Description of careers for which concentration prepares students:
This concentration prepares students for management careers in IT-intensive business contexts whether as line-of business managers, IT managers, or IT management consultants. A growing number of line management positions in the entertainment industry, the networked digital industry, and the financial services industry require a solid understanding of IT capabilities and IS skills. Many graduates also join the management consulting practices at major consulting firms and at large software systems vendors, and some choose to work as managers in IT organizations. Enterprises are increasingly "baking-in" information technologies into business and a solid set of IS skills that goes beyond one course. These skills are increasingly becoming "a must" for any line management position in progressive companies.

Description of the academic content and requirements for concentration:
The study of information systems is about understanding how to manage the relationship between information technology capabilities and the functioning of a business. It includes understanding how to intelligently harness the strategic business value of information and communication technologies. It includes how to organizationally implement and deploy different types of information systems within and across enterprises, while understanding user needs whether they are consumers or enterprise users. It includes understanding the entire set of systems and activities needed to manage and use information and knowledge assets in an organization. The courses of study build skills in information systems management, business process improvement, systems analysis and design, database design, managing intellectual assets, data warehousing and business intelligence systems, as well as providing an understanding of the impacts of disruptive technologies.
