Scotland Highlands

HighlandsWith some friends visiting from the US, we decided it would be fun to road trip in Scotland! We had heard that the island of Skye in the Scotland highlands is as beautiful as it gets, so of course we had to get there. The road trip takes 5 hours to get from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye, and we set out on Saturday morning to get there.

Castle in Isle of SkyeUnfortunately, even after making our way to the rental station by about 9 or 10, we found out that we couldn’t rent a car unless you’re 23 from most rental places in the UK, despite online saying that you can rent cars when you’re 21 AND even letting you book car reservations (which I still haven’t been reimbursed from). After trekking around the airport trying to convince rental car places to let us drive their cars, we were told to go to a place 15 minutes away that rents to basically anyone. We took their advice and ended up with a very easy rental process, so if you’re ever in Scotland trying to rent, rent from Greenmotion!

Oban FoodOnce we made it out finally around 1, we started our road trip on the LEFT side of the road. Definitely took a minute to get used to and every time I took a turn I checked every way five times because I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. We headed toward a recommendation given to us at one of the rental stations, to go to Oban, the only preserved fisherman town in Scotland. The scene there was mellow and relaxed, with soft beach breezes throughout a Fishermans market and small pubs with locals scattered throughout. We made our way to a small one by the pier, and ordered some lunch involving classics of shepards pie and fish & chips, as well as a haddock chowder, each leaving us very content. We got back on the road and headed for our final destination: Uig, which is on the cliffs of the Isle of Skye, where a small town can be found on the water.

Once we finally made it, it had gotten dark, but the moon was so bright we could see the glistening water of the town below, and were greeted by the Fairy Houses that we rented from Airbnb.

Fairy GlenWaking up was a dream. The view of the cliffs and the Scotland grasses was breathtaking, all visible from our little fairy house with glass windows. For the next two days, we traveled around the highlands visiting the best recommendations of the Isles, our favorite being the fairy glen. This area looked straight out of a fairytale, with rolling hills covered in mosses. We expected trolls or wizards to appear every turn we took.

All of the Scotland countryside was unique, with new animals we hadn’t seen in the US, making for a beautiful road trip. I hope to return when I have time to hike around!

Bis zum nächsten mal!
