I can definitely say I have become accustomed to life here in South Korea. I just wanted to do a quick recap on my first month abroad. I arrived in mid-February, but I did not do much other than quarantine. I spent the first two weeks exploring the area of Seoul in March. Lots of walking to the point I lost weight while still being able to eat a lot of great and delicious food in South Korea! I love how accessible everything is here. The transportation system is the best I have ever seen. It is very clean, accurate, and fast.
One of my favorite things to do in South Korea is getting street food! This is sotteok (sausage and rice cake covered in gochujang). They sell a lot of these outside the station and also in the station if you miss your stop and want a quick bite. In general, I am in love with the food here. Another favorite is dakgalbi! This is spicy stir-fried chicken which is covered in a large amount of cheese on top. I love ordering this with friends when I am at a pub or restaurant. I must say, I have been eating a lot of fried chicken here. However, I think it is a must because Korea makes the best fried chicken. There are so many variations that I didn't know were possible. I recently tried rose fried chicken which is named after rose pasta. Rose sauce is made by mixing the traditional spicy sauce infused with gochujang and gochugaru with cream or milk making it creamy while toning down the heat.
I also really enjoy buying snacks from the convenience store. It is one of the rare places that is open 24/7 in South Korea. Due to the pandemic, South Korea is currently under a 11pm curfew where almost every place has to close before then. I won’t lie, it has been extremely difficult having fun that way when the night ends so early. However, it was recently announced a few days ago that South Korea has passed the peak of the Omicron virus. I think better days are coming soon! A lot of people are speculating that the curfew will be lifted, so I am extremely excited as I will have three more months to have a longer night out.
In terms of classes, I think it is going well so far. I do not think my classes are particularly interesting though. It is currently week five of classes, but for some reason I feel the pace is going much slower than when I was at USC. I felt the classwork was much more rigorous and fast paced to the point where I always felt overwhelmed with schoolwork. In a way, I am very happy that I do not feel as stressed with schoolwork here at Korea University because it makes me feel less guilty when I am out exploring Korean culture with my friends. I have about three more weeks until the midterm examination period, so I really want to make the most of it before I have to really focus on my studies. Also, I ran into an accident and broke my MacBook. I was worried that I would fall behind in my schoolwork without a laptop but caught up pretty quickly. I ended up having to buy a new MacBook at the Apple Store in Gangnam which I did not expect to do. My bank account does not look pretty right now, so I might have to cut off my spending for a few weeks. I also have my MacBook with a Korean keyboard which I thought was pretty cool since it is not something you can buy from the U.S store!
I ended my last day in March with a huge feast at a popular brunch place called Maple Top. It is very foreigner friendly and the owner is from California! I think this is my favorite brunch place so far and would extremely recommend it. They serve bottomless mimosa which is what the restaurant is actually most known for. My first month in South Korea has been extremely amazing and I am sad that I only have three more months in this beautiful country. I am most excited for the spring weather as the cool winter is finally over now!
Next week, I am trying to plan a trip to somewhere outside Seoul since the weather is so nice. I cannot wait to document that as this will be my first time leaving the city. I will be going to the countryside so it will be a huge change in scenery.
Until then, see you guys next week for my adventures in South Korea for the month of April!
