Goodbye Jeju! See you soon, Seoul.

May 08, 2022

My friends and I woke up at 5:00am, which was an hour earlier than we were supposed to. We actually woke up early because we really wanted to go to some cafes since we did not have the chance to do so yesterday. We visited Knotted Donuts and Randy’s Donut which is one of the hottest tourist spots in Aewol. mThe sun did not rise yet, so it was really gloomy and cloudy. However, the sea was really beautiful and I wish I got more pictures but we were running late to the airport. In the end, we arrived earlier than expected since there were no cars on the road at that time so we decided to grab breakfast before going on the airplane. My friends and I decided to get Sundubu-jjigae which is a soft tofu stew. The dish is made with freshly curdled soft tofu, vegetables, sometimes mushrooms, onion, optional seafood, optional meat, and gochujang or gochu garu.

We boarded the 7:20am flight and arrived in Seoul an hour later. To help save cost, my friends and I decided to go home by subway since we spent so much money on taxis in Jeju. I was extremely exhausted because luckily we arrived on Sunday, so I did not have to worry about attending classes. I slept the entire day once I got home and woke up around 6:00pm, so I messed up my sleep schedule pretty badly. I tried to unpack the majority of that night, but was so tired I kept taking frequent naps. I mainly just spent the day resting and unwinding from a long trip. mSince I was having fun and neglecting my classroom while in Jeju, I had to pull an allnighter to complete the remaining assignments I had to do. I did not attend a few lectures while in Jeju, so I also had to play catch-up and watch the recorded lectures. A few friends called me to go hang out with them for dinner, but I was so tired I declined.

While I did not do much today, I enjoyed the peace I had! I think while studying abroad, most students feel the need to always keep themselves busy and go out as much as they can. I see many exchange students talking to me about trying to do the most they can before they leave the country. While I think that is true due to the limited time we have, I still think it is important to have a few days off to relax. I remember when I first came to South Korea two months ago, I was rarely in my room and always wandering outside. I got burned out easily to the point I was forcing myself to go out. I think having rest days is extremely important while studying abroad to just settle down and recharge. It is one of the reasons why I felt my Jeju trip was really fun despite the bad weather conditions. I felt more excited to go out compared to the times where I was going out everyday.

mI have two months left in South Korea, so I still have a lot of exciting things I want to do. I think my next stop outside of Seoul is going to be in Busan! There is actually a long weekend coming up as it is Children’s Day, a national holiday in South Korea. A lot of exchange students are going to Busan during this time, but because I just went to Jeju recently, I decided to go at the end of the month to avoid the travel burnout.

On the positive side, since a lot of my exchange friends are coming back from Busan, it is easier to narrow down the places I want to visit after hearing their stories and recommendations on places to go to. That is it for this blog, see you next time
