Bad news in South Korea :’(

April 27, 2022

In my previous post I mentioned that my roommate caught covid after spending a weekend in Busan. I tested immediately when she found out, and luckily my results were negative. mI still had to isolate myself into another room, but I was free to go out. However, they did not immediately move my roommate to another room after finding out she was positive, so the exposure I had with her was more than 48 hours.

For the next four days, I did not develop any symptoms so I went clubbing with my friends in Gangnam on the weekend. My friend had bought a table, so I thought that it would be fine since it means I would not be in contact with many people other than my friends who I knew were negative. I did a test the next day just in case. I was still negative, so at that point I figured that my booster covid was working and there was no way I could have caught covid from my roommate.

I proceeded normally with my life and went to get cheese tonkatsu at a place nearby Korea University. nIt was super delicious! My friend really wanted dessert afterwards, so we walked over to a cafe that sells these really good croffle, which is a combination of a waffle and a croissant. The set comes with gelato ice cream. Super tasty! This place was also a popular study cafe for students, so my friend and I studied here while enjoying a delicious treat. At one point, I started coughing. Initially I thought I was just choking from small bits of the waffle. Then, I brushed it off and thought it might be due to the ice cream being cold. When I parted ways with my friend, I felt a bit uncomfortable. I ended up stopping by the convenience store to buy a self-kit covid test. Even though I tested negative the morning before going out, I felt that this could be covid symptom. When I got home, I tested immediately. Sure enough, I saw two lines…..

I tested positive for covid. I was pretty upset. I had just shared gelato ice cream with a friend, but also I tested negative hours before going out. nEveryone I met up with recently told me they were all negative too. The only person I could have caught covid from was my roommate. I was really upset as I had made plans that had to be canceled as I had to go into quarantine now. To make matters worse, midterms were coming up. I was getting scared and worried because my symptoms were pretty bad. Initially it started out with a sore throat, but progressively got worse with headache and fatigue. I did not have a fever when I took my temperature, but my body felt so hot. I was also really behind on my school work. I had a lot of lectures to catch up on, but did not get the chance to even watch the lectures. I had a headache everytime I opened my laptop, so I ended up sleeping the majority of the first four days I tested positive. My roommate was in a separate quarantine room, so it was good that we were separate and had our own room to recover. Next week is all midterms, so I am extremely nervous. I will wrap up this blog for now. See you in my next blog where I will share my experience with midterm week in South Korea!
