GEMBA Class XII Studying Hard and Having Fun in Los Angeles

USC-SJTU Global EMBA Program in Shanghai (GEMBA) Class XII just finished their second module in Los Angeles. Students flew to L.A. from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand and elsewhere for the eight-day study session, featuring the beautiful USC campus and California sunshine.
Dodger Stadium on Father’s Day
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the city’s first professional sports teams, and have won many World Series. Our students enjoyed a game pitting the Dodgers against their traditional rivals the San Francisco Giants, saw several home-runs during the evening, while eating Dodger dogs, wearing Dodger caps and participating in the cheers from the 50,000 fans in Dodger Stadium near USC.

GEMBA classes atthe World-renowned Marshall School of Business
GEMBA members are officially registered as USC students. So every June brings their first classes on the USC campus. The theme they study, Evaluating Market Performance, is typical of the integrated, theme-based curriculum uniquely designed by the USC Marshall School of Business. In this theme, four USC Marshall facultylead dynamic class sessions from the perspective of accounting, statistics, corporate finance and communications leadership.
Aside from engaging with the top-ranked faculty, GEMBA students visited the USC bookstore to buy USC souvenirs and wore them while walking around the campus and posing in front of Tommy Trojan. They also had the opportunity to network with other Marshall programs such as IBEAR.

Ex-classroom engagement with the international city of Los Angeles
Los Angeles is probably the most international of all the U.S. cities, an ideal reflection of the diversified GEMBA class members. Our GEMBA XII class has several students based in L.A. They showed their hospitality by arranging barbecue in Korea Town, visits to famous scenic spots such as Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Walk of Stars, Santa Monica beach and pier, etc. The class also enjoyed Southern California’s iconic In-N-Out Burger.

Class Olympics – Building a Stronger Team
GEMBA Class XII elected their CEOs (Chief Entertainment Officers) during their first module in Shanghai, in May 2015. The class CEOs organize extra-curricular activities, to enhance the GEMBA experience. The Class XII CEOs took the initiative to organize the first-ever GEMBA Class Olympics, with seven competitions: puzzles, dancing, six-legged race, hoola-hoop relay, flip the cup, basketball shots and creative bowling. Each GEMBA XII contributed to bolster the class spirit. The class CEOs who led the effort deserve our recognition:  Larry Chi, Bernard Chu, Ami Sin and Patrick Sun. GEMBA XII Amber Koh, based in L.A., provided GEMBA-worthy local support.

Site visit to the FedEx Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), engagement with Director of Operations
Our class engaged powerfully with FedEx at LAX, featuring a deeply informative talk by Mr. Steve Hornstra, a Director of FedEex Operations for the western U.S., a graduate of our USC Marshall EMBA program. Hornstra shared FedEx success stories, challenges and corporate culture. As FedEx is one of the earliest foreign-owned companies investing in China, with their initial initiatives dating back to the 1980s, our GEMBA students were keenly interested in FedEx’ experience and strategy in the China market. After his talk, Hornstra led a tour of the FedEx facility, pointing out details of FedEx’ world-leading operations.
